This Great Composer’s father was an organist, choir master and pianist. He also taught. In other words, he was always away from home making music some way or another. As a result, he could do no better at home than offer his four sons “benign neglect.” So who is this absence father, and who was his famous son, this Great Composer?

The Great Composer whose dad, Adolph von Holst, was too busy making music all over town (Cheltenham, Gloucestshire, England) to pay much attention to his four sons, the oldest of whom was Gustav, who ultimately did not master the organ or piano, but instead took up the trombone, and even that choice was driven by his desire to improve his asthma-stricken lungs.
