The Great Composer Quiz – September 18, 2020
Time’s up, pencils down, the Great Composer who was taught by one Great Composer, was the object of veneration by a second Great Composer and took the place of a third Great Composer who was his godfather.
The answer is Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach, fifth child and second surviving son of Johann Sebastian Bach, who taught all his male children. It was Mozart who said CPE was the father and all the rest were his children. CPE was considered for decades the most accomplished member of the Bach Family. CPE’s godfather was Georg Philipp Telemann, who held the post of Kantor of the Academic School of the Johanneum (a grammar school founded in 1529 and still operating today), as well as music director of the five largest churches in Hamburg. CPE succeeded him.
