The Great Composer Quiz – October 27, 2020

Time’s up, pencils down, the Great Composer whose first opera was shut down by a government censor, Der Krumme Teufel (The Limping Devil, or, The Lame Devil) and who was so free with his manuscripts he started seeing them being sold in music shops either under his name or another composer’s. The answer is Joseph Haydn. He would be more disturbed by this practice many years later when his music routinely would fetch large sums. It was the Countess Thun who heard one of his works and hired him to be her voice and keyboard teacher. The Countess also taught him how to behave in a professional manner, and how to deal with thieves who would steal his music, his identity.
